What’s the process for determining these dates?
The Char Dham is tucked away in the remote areas of Uttarakhand hills. During the winter, the Dhams are blanketed with heavy snowfall, restricting access to the region. Therefore, the Dham is shut temporarily in winter, and the idols are brought to their winter seat.
The priests reveal the Chardham opening dates on auspicious occasions annually. Mahashivratri marks the declaration of Kedarnath’s opening dates, Badrinath’s on Basant Panchami, and Gangotri-Yamunotri's opens on Akshaya Tritya or shortly after.
Likewise, the shrines are closed with the chanting of Vedic mantras and the performance of rituals on auspicious days. Usually, the Yamunotri Dham & Kedarnath Dhams are closed on the occasion of Bhai Dooj, while the Gangotri Dham closes on the day of Govardhan Puja. On the day of Vijaydashmi, the Badrinath-Kedarnath Committee declares the closure dates for Badrinath Dham.
